What's in for Haircuts, colors, etc...Trends from the NY International Beauty Show

Everyone always asks what's in style... I say it is what you make of it, create your own. For those who truly want the newest looks...here you go!

A very heavy, rounded angled bang. Fairly thick and heavy, not blended into sides. Reminds me of the days of Vidal Sassoon.

Short hair is in as always, but with a twist. The front and top is left longer so you have more flexibility and added softness. Makes a short cut look more feminine!

This "suicide blonde" look involves decolorizing the hair to achieve the blondest tones possible. Blonde is in.... add lots of highlights to get an even lighter multi dimensional effect.

Bring on the gray hairs... I will cover them!

So, for all who know my twins Alexa and Brianna, they will turn 16 on August 6. As unbelievable this is to all of you, it is even crazier for me. On top of planning my 20th class reunion, now I have to plan this great 16th party for my girls as well as the beginning of dating and DRIVING.

Here comes the gray hair. Stress can signal the start of gray hair. So far, at almost 39, I don't think I have had any...maybe one or two. But tonight, as I took the girls out driving in a parking lot, Bree almost launched my car over the grass strip. I think one gray may pop out tomorrow. I really want to look my best for November 28th, permanent haircolor may be on my roots by then.

I am going to do my best to not stress when they are behind the wheel but it is tough. Maybe once they have their own cars I will feel better - I don't want mine wrecked.. and I REALLY don't want any of those shiny, sparkling hairs on top of my head!

I tell my clients that gray hairs are experienced hairs... now I am rethinking that term. What can we call them...anyone with ideas let me know!

As hard as it is to realize my girls will be 16, only have 2 more years of school to go, it is even harder to believe I have been in the beauty industry for 20 years! It is amazing how fast time goes - I would like it to slow down - I feel I have so much to do, not enough time. Read a quote the other day....
"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein." H. Jackson Brown

How true is that? So now I am changing my thinking. I have the same amount of time as these great ones had. I just need to use my time wisely, stop looking at how much time has gone, look at all the stuff I get to do in the hopefully long life I have ahead of me. I will get to enjoy this time with my girls behind the wheel, primping for prom ( oh boy!) and getting ready for graduation. This year it will be applying for colleges, working on senior projects, drying their tears after a boy breaks their hearts. It will be the time to see that all I have done with and for my kids will be worth the gray hairs I receive.

Why I educate.,....

Artistic Trends is known as an education salon - it is what we strive to do. We want our clients to have the information they need to continue their beauty at home. We do this in many ways: email newsletters, in salon hands on classes, education by the stylist when you have your hair, nails, skin care done.

Not only do I like to inform clients on how to care for themselves but I really want others to take care of our Earth. I am sick of seeing trash along the roads, overflowing trash cans in public, bottles in trash cans, etc. We have become a society of use and throw away. What ever happened to the days when we didn't have all these convienences that we just throw away? Bottled water? Soda? Paper, paper, paper. Our forefathers saved what they had an used most things in other ways.

When I was a kid, my parents bought a 10 acre farm in Roaring Branch,PA. The house was old, built in 1895 or so by this couple and their 2 kids. Their son, Willard, stayed on the farm after his parents died. He didn't throw ANYTHING away.... He had a compost bin. He had glass jars in the garage that he put nuts, bolts, nails in. He saved wood and either burned it or carved it, I think he even carved a set of crutches out of wood! He used stained, torn clothes as rags. We did find a pile of old cans too -not sure what he was going to do with them. We found so many things in that home, barn and out buildings - unbelievable the things we saw!

What am I getting at? We don't often think of reusing things. We buy new and get rid of what we don't need. We are a society of misuse. Of course, our municipalities don't make it easy on us when they do not offer ways of us ridding the trash. For example - how many times to you throw a #5 plastic in the garbage because our area does not take it? LOTS! Cream cheese containers, yogurt, sour cream as well as other food items often come in #5. What do you do with them? Rinse them, save them. Go to http://www.earth911.org/ and type in #5 plastic - there is a place in Allentown where you can drop them off. They melt them down and make little plastic pellets which become new plastic items.

How about used up gift cards and such? DO you know how much plastic that is? Again go to earth 911 - gift cards can be sent to this company with recycles them into new items! Did you know that the plastic bottle lids from our waters, sodas, etc should NOT be left on the bottles? They are a different plastic and can actually ruin a batch. Save them up, bring them into the salon and I will take them to the nearest Aveda store. They recycle them into NEW Plastic bottles! Bring me your used of makeup containers - Origins takes them and turns them into containers for all kinds of things.

Oh...the newest thing to recycle??? HAIR! Lauren at the salon found a website called http://www.matteroftrust.org/. They take donations of hair cuttings to make oil spill mats. So you could get your hair cut and the clippings will go to save water, plants and animals from the dangers of oil spills in our waterways! They also make these into mats that help plants grow better.... I need to check into that.

See - hair, skin and nails has been a 20 something year passion for me. Welcome to the newest addition to my list of passions - I love to educate others on the positive virtues of recycling, reducing and reusing. I think real beauty comes from within and from around - I think someone can be beautiful - until I see them throw something recyclable away!

Please - no throwing stones. I know there are people out there who think I am kooky, off my rocker, etc. I don't think of this as saving the Earth this minute, but when my kids, grandkids, etc are growing older and having their generations following them. Other countries have been greener than we have for some time. It is nothing new - we just don't want to do it because YES< it does take some extra time. But have you ever SEEN a landfill? Where is all this trash going to go????? If not for you, do it for the people not here yet. Your genes will be living on in someone else someday - if you don't have kids thinks of neices, nephews, etc.

Let's make the Earth a place where animals and humans can survive for a long time to come.
